Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (now Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 points in the Olympic competition. Bela Karrolyi, the Romanian gymnastics instructor who later became her coach later on, discovered her at age six. She first competed at the junior national championships of Romania in the year 1969, she finished 13th. Then in the year 1970, she was crowned champion. In 1972, during the communist nations' meet for junior athletes prior to the Olympics, she was awarded three gold medals. After that, in 1973 and '74 she was the junior champion in all aspects. She won four gold and one silver medals in her senior debut international competition that took place in 1975. This was her first time she had competed as a senior. The first female to ever successfully complete the backwards double salto when dismounting from an uneven parallel bar.
